Serbia overview

Serbia is a house by the road, a crossroad of many ways, a place where Europe joins Middle East and Asia. In this house about 10 million people lives in harmony. Not only Serbs, but 37 nationalities! This diversity of people and cultures gives Serbia its strength and make its fortune.

Treasure of different languages, religions, customs and cultures makes Serbia magical “mixture of aromatic spices” where Oriental exoticism, Byzantium reflection and modern West spirit completely interweave. This trinity makes the essence of the attitude of this country. It is in Serbia’s foundation, the source of its fascinating beauty, exciting tastes, home fireplace scent… Serbia, warm and blessed, rushes to the future, having in mind its roots and confiding, at least, on one foot on its tradition.

ImageHearts of Serbian hosts’ are wide open to blood brother, cousin, best man, as well as for any other guest who is welcomed in the same way at midnight and midday! In Serbia guest is welcomed with preserved fruit and spring water, with salt and home-made bannock, the best domestic brandy, hot corn bread, cheese and cream, excellent pie, baked beans, boiled cabbage, in Serbia called “wedding cabbage” and roast meat… Family, friends and guests in Serbia are welcomed with a shake of the hands and three-time kiss in the cheek; in the name of life, in the name of death, and in the name of honour.

ImageSpeaking of honour, one of the best evidence it still exists in Serbia, are typical Serbian taverns, very specific for each town. Famous Serbian author ones wrote: “Tavern is for Serbs what square was for ancient Greeks. Belgrade is breezy city, springs are cold, autumns rainy, and summer sultriness unbearable. And, squares are not among the most beautiful in Europe. People gather on squares rarely, only in key historical moments. Therefore, for public life remained taverns, restaurants, bars and in newer time – cafés; those cradles that swayed away famous Belgrade spirit.”

Tavern is a special institution in Serbia. A place where you can feel the “pulse” of the nation: what people think and what intends to do. For centuries, in taverns governments have been destroyed, important political decisions have been made, honour has been defended… Even today, in taverns, Serbia lives a parallel, maybe shorter, but fare more exciting life!

Serbs are temperamental people who seem to have red wine instead of blood circulating in their veins. They can love and passionately defend their beliefs, tradition and history!
